50 Year Reunion Weekend

Our 50 Years of Football celebrations over the weekend of April 27th to 28th 2019 were blessed with great weather and was a huge success with tremendous support on both days. There was much reminiscing, embellished stories and plenty of laughter.

The C Grade and B Grade kicked of the weekend with 20+ goal wins while the A Grade kept the large crowd on its toes with a come from behind win. It was great to see so many past players drop in during the day. Tony Coulter our first Coach was one of the first to arrive, Pastor Clem Traeger our oldest player/official was present and Pastor Vic Pfitzner and John Halbert spent the A Grade sitting together on the sidelines mulling over old times. The gathering was well fed by Munch and his team‘s Monster BBQ which was complimented by a great glass of wine from the Hoklas family. This was followed by sweet goodies from the Women’s Football team, washed down with a coffee or maybe a beer or two.

Almost 200 people then enjoyed the Anniversary Dinner on Saturday night. West Adelaide FC were great hosts with excellent food and service. Caleb did a great job of bringing the evening together as MC and Wayne Gladigau officially launched “A Bulldog For Me” – 50 Year History Book. We were lucky to be entertained by our speakers, Peter Miller who got our night off to a flying start with the “Born in a Stable at Bethlehem” story followed by Kevin Bell’s memories of the early days. Nick Kriewaldt then shared memories of his 353 games while John Harms took 20 minutes to share his I game,(15 minute) career as only he could. Bob Paech shared and compared his times at ALFC and Glenelg, especially playing against the 2 Ports while Tim Stollznow rounded off the night with a glimpse into the future. There was much fun and banter in the back room as Eddie tried to organise groups for photos. The highlight of the night was the laughter and smiles on faces as people caught up with each other. It was great to see partners having a laugh or two and the enjoyment they got out of the evening.

As people rolled up for the Celebration Service on Sunday it was great to see our Juniors already in action and goodies for sale on the Junior Stall. Over 70 people participated in a meaningful, well thought out and moving service led by Peter Miller and supported by the ALSC All Star Band. Numerous people shared testimonies during the service. After the service we were once again well fed with Yiros from the Men’s Football, golden Hot Chips from the Cricketers and Strawberries and Ice Cream along with a mousse or two from the Netballers. Dean and Julie Hoklas were on hand again to keep the red flowing along with the Coffee Van which was needed early on by a few.

The young ones were kept busy with the Bouncy Castle, Face Painting and pestering Mum and Dad for more money. It was then time to sit back with a quiet ale and watch the girls in action. While they didn’t quite get up for a win there many highlights to keep the crowd entertained. There were the other amusements of Stolly trying to run the boundary after a big night while Boomer and Hammers tried to operate the Scoreboard while balancing glasses of red wine and stubbies of beer! The Weekend concluded fittingly about 5pm with people in a large circle, a glass of red wine in hand, sharing embellished stories of the past.
